ABC Challenge 'Z': Zig Zag

The ABC Challenge is over! I can't quite believe I made it through a 7-month-long nail art challenge. It has been a lot of fun, and of course huge thanks are in order to Emiline of Nail Polish Society for organising this. Be sure to have a look at all of my previous designs here! My personal favourites are the emerald, palm trees and watermarble.

And for the last letter Z, I chose to do this zig zag design. Check out the full post for more photos!

ABC Challenge 'Y': Yellow

Only one more letter left on the ABC Challenge! For the letter Y, I could only think of 'yellow' for the longest time, then last week I actually thought of 'Yuletide'. But I'd already done 'Xmas' last week, so I settled for yellow after all. I don't dislike the colour but it does not go with my skintone, so I went for these little yellow flowers.

I've been getting rather off track for the ABC Challenge, but luckily it is taking a week's break this Friday for Thanksgiving, so I'll be able to catch up next week! Here are my X for Xmas nails - although all the blue and snowflakes made it more winter than Christmas! Do have a look at the full post for more photos.

Purple reverse stamping (Beautometry contest entry)

If you follow me on Instagram you might have seen that I recently decided to enter Beautometry's 'Next top swatcher' contest. There are four rounds over four weeks, each with a different theme, and at the moment I've managed to make it to the third round! The contest is decided by the number of votes (likes), so if you like this design please do take a minute to like my official entries on Instagram and Facebook!

The theme for this week is purple - which was fun as it's my favourite colour. I've also filmed a video tutorial for this design, have a look at the full post to check it out!

ABC Challenge 'R': Retro reverse stamping

The ABC Challenge is back! If you haven't heard of this before, this is a weekly nail art challenge hosted by Emiline of Nail Polish Society. Each week centers around a different letter of the English alphabet, and the previous letter was 'Q' back in August. The challenge took a break in September, and now it's back, with the letter 'R'.

I decided to go for one of my favourite nail art techniques, reverse stamping. I also picked a retro-style pattern for an additional R element.

HPB Presents: Glitter toppers

I'm getting back into a weekly routine here, which will fit very well with the ABC challenge which is picking up again next Friday! We'll be continuing where we left off, with the letter R. This week, I have a design that's part of a different link-up - this is hosted by Hobby Polish Bloggers, a friendly Facebook group for nail bloggers. HPB hosts a link-up every month with a different theme, and for September the theme is Glitter Toppers.

Dotticure with Meebox polishes (Aug 2016)

Hello and welcome back! This week I've done something fairly simple, using the polishes that came in last month's Boho-themed MeeBox.

Bottle: Barry M 'Green Berry'
MeeBox is a monthly subscription box for nail polish and nail art products, but you can choose to skip any month if the theme doesn't appeal to you. The three polishes from the Boho box - Cuccio 'Prince I've Been Gone' (deep green), Barry M 'Green Berry', and Zoya 'Aggie' (gold) - go really well together, so I've combined them in this 'dotticure' (dots + manicure).

'Mani Swap Circle': Double-stamped ornate design

This week, as part of a collaboration on Instagram called the 'mani swap circle', I've recreated (as closely as I could) a design by Gen of @vernimage.

This collaboration is run every two weeks by @glacewing and @natasha_dauncey, who put all of the participants into a circular list, and pick a colour theme. Each person recreates a design done by the person after them in the list, switching up the colours to the chosen theme. This round, the theme was light grey/silver, which is why my recreation on the left is much less colourful than the original!

Negative space stamping with Glam Polish

It's been a while since I've done nail art that wasn't for a nail art challenge or review! So while the ABC challenge is currently on hold for the month of September, I'm back to thinking up designs solely based on polishes or patterns that I feel like trying out. WMPW: French tip watermarble

Today's the last day of August's Watermarble Practice Wednesday, run by @apolishedcolleen on Instagram. I've had a fun time with this challenge this month - you can find my other designs here - black and white swirls, beverage-inspired, and red. (I did miss one of the themes due to catching up on work, unfortunately!)

Today's theme is 'French tip', and I decided to take the prompt literally with these watermarbled French tips.

ABC Challenge 'P': Palm trees

Welcome back to another instalment of Nail Polish Society's ABC Challenge! This week we've arrived at the letter 'P'. WMPW: Beverage-inspired watermarble

This month I've decided to take on @apolishedcolleen's Watermarble Practice Wednesday challenge. Last week's theme was 'black and white swirls', and if you read that post you might remember that I was not completely successful. However I got a lot of helpful advice on Instagram on how to fix the issue I was having, and today I'm extremely pleased to present my first successful no-cheat watermarble!

ABC Challenge 'N': Negative space half-moons

Hello again and welcome to another instalment of the ABC Challenge! This week it's time for the letter 'N', and I decided to go with 'negative space'. I didn't really have a concrete plan, I kind of made it up as I went, and I ended up with this half-moon design.

ABC Challenge 'M': Marine magnetic nail art

Hello and welcome back to another instalment of the ABC Challenge! This week marks the halfway-point of the challenge, but it's not too late to join in - follow the link above to find out more.

For the letter 'M' I first decided to do something with magnetic nail polish, as I'm a huge fan of the 3D-like effect that it has. One of my own favourite designs so far has to be my emerald design, which I did for the letter 'E', where I used a dark green magnetic polish by Masura. In that post I mentioned that I also had a couple of other colours, and today I've used the dark blue one called 'Indian Night'.

My initial plan was just to do a wave pattern - after I'd finished that, I realised I could add some marine life for an additional 'M' element! Read on for all the details, more photos, and the video tutorial.

ABC Challenge 'L': Lace nails

It's week 12 of the ABC Challenge, which brings us to the letter 'L'! I wanted to try layered stamping, but as it's been a busy week I decided to do something simpler. I ended up with this freehand lace design, completely inspired by this design by Lacquerstyle.

Of course, the freehand aspect of this was not part of the initial plan to keep things simple! I was hoping to just stamp on a lace pattern, but that didn't work out. Read on for the details and more photos (no video tutorial this week).

Review: Nail stencils/vinyls by Born Pretty Store

Press sample [?]: These nail stencils were sent to me by Born Pretty Store for my honest review.

Born Pretty Store does not need much introduction to nail art enthusiasts! This online shop sells an enormous variety of affordable nail art supplies, from polishes to stamping plates to brushes and beyond. Recently I got the chance to try out some of their new nail stencils (aka vinyls).

These stencils caught my eye because the patterns are very finely cut. The lines are even thinner than striping tape, and some of the gaps in the vinyls are really small. I wanted to find out if these would work well, or if such fine details are best left to other techniques like stamping.

I'm glad to say that they worked wonderfully, and I would definitely recommend them. They are especially suitable for short nails that don't have as much space for detailed designs. Read on for the full review, the nail designs that I did using these stencils, and a video tutorial.

ABC Challenge 'J': Jewellery-inspired nail art

It's already the tenth week of the ABC challenge - which brings us to the letter 'J'. (Last week I did ice-pop nails for 'I') I found J quite a difficult letter, I did have a few ideas but I wasn't entirely convinced by them (jelly sandwich, jungle leaves, jasmine, jewels). Finally I decided to do this jewellery-inspired necklace design.

ABC Challenge 'I': Ice pop nail art

It's Friday again - and today we've arrived at the letter 'I' on the ABC Challenge. Last week I did hibiscus nails for 'H', and I thought I would keep with the summer/tropical theme with this ice pop or popsicle design.

ABC Challenge 'H': Hibiscus nail art

It's ABC Challenge day again! Last week for the letter 'G' I did a geometric design, and at the end of that post I mentioned that I hoped to do some reverse stamping this week. I have indeed managed to do so, and here are my Hibiscus nails for the letter 'H'.

ABC Challenge 'G': Gold geometric nails

For this week's ABC Challenge (we're now at the letter G!) I've done a simple geometric design using gold foil and a magnetic polish.

It has been a busy week for me again, so I changed my mind about doing a glitter placement, and instead went for this really quick and easy look using temporary tattoos. It's even easier than using water decals! Check out the full post for the video tutorial and more photos.

ABC Challenge 'F': French tips

It's Friday - time for the next instalment of the ABC challenge! I wanted to do something simple this week - no stamping, gradients, decals or anything that has a good chance of failing. (Didn't want to end up with an F for Fail!) Initially I thought of doing some floral French tips, but I settled with a colourful, glittery variant of the classic French manicure.

ABC Challenge 'E': Emerald nails

At the end of last week's post (D for dry marble) I mentioned that I had a plan for my 'E' nails which I hoped would work. It did! Here are my emerald nails for the letter E, for week 5 of Nail Polish Society's ABC Challenge (follow the link to find out more about it).

ABC Challenge 'D': Dry marble nails

Another Friday, another instalment of the ABC Challenge! (Follow the link to find out more about it.) Last week for the letter 'C', I did constellation nails. Today for 'D' I chose to do this design using the dry marble method.

ABC Challenge 'B': Bow nails

I'm back with my entry for 'B' on Nail Polish Society's ABC Challenge! This is a new weekly nail art challenge based on the 26 letters of the alphabet. Last Friday I did an accent nail design for 'A'.

For 'B', I had a few ideas - my favourite was my sister's quirky idea of 'Bonsai'. However, given my lack of freehand painting skills and a stamping plate with bonsai patterns - I settled for 'Bows', using my favourite tool, striping tape.

ABC Challenge 'A': Accent nail (& A-England)

Emiline of Nail Polish Society recently came up with a new nail art challenge inspired by the (English) alphabet. It initially looked daunting, as the schedule stretches on until December to accommodate all 26 letters, once a week on Fridays.

Then I started getting lots of ideas for several letters, and I realised that this is quite a brilliant challenge, because it leaves a lot of room for interpretation. But it is still a challenge because it does introduce a constraint - for instance, my previous striped design had absolutely nothing in it that would have fit the 'A' prompt. And I will be painting my nails at least weekly for the foreseeable future - so I'm on board!

Striped nails with 'Hatch' and 'Cin Cin'

Along with the Cirque Colors Metropolis cremes that I recently blogged about - Whitney, Don't Forget the Cannoli, and Chelsea Girl - I also bought a few polishes from their recent Speckled and Sparkled collection. For this relatively simple design I've used 'Hatch' and 'Cin Cin'.

Delicate gradient and stamping with A-England

This is my fourth design in a row using the reverse stamping method! This and my previous ornate design don't need reverse stamping, as I could achieve accurate pattern placement using a clear, see-through stamper. But last time I still got a crooked pattern despite using a clear stamper - because the pattern got distorted when I pressed the stamper down onto my curved nail - so I just stuck with reverse stamping this time.

Delicate gradient and stamping with A-England 'Her Rose Adagio', 'Virgin Queen', 'Incense Burner'

The idea for this came from my A-England polishes that I recently bought (they were on sale!) - I saw the bottles side-by-side and I thought they would look good in a gradient. Read on for all the details, more photos including macros - and another video tutorial!

Green and gold reverse stamping

Today the theme on clairestelle8's challenge is green, and this was rather tricky because green polishes are not my favourite. I do own several, because I don't dislike the colour green, but I find that I often don't really like how they look on my nails.

After many experiments on my UberMat I decided on this green and gold design. The gold sections on the middle and ring fingers were done using the 'reverse stamping' method.

Read on to find out how I did this - there is a video! It is sped up and condensed to fit Instagram's 15-second video limit (I haven't received the 60-second update yet), but I've described bits that the video leaves out. I've been on a Cirque Colors roll! This is the third of the three polishes that I bought from their new additions to their Metropolis collection. I would get them all if I could!

Half-moon design with Cirque Colors 'Chelsea Girl'

I just wanted to do something simple this round, so I decided against completing the 'Cities' prompt of clairestelle8's challenge. I definitely will join in again next time on the 'Nautical' prompt, however!

So today I ended up with this matte half-moon design, featuring another polish from Cirque Colors' new additions to their Metropolis collection, 'Chelsea Girl'. Read on to see how I did this, and for a photo of the design before I added matte top coat.
