ABC Challenge 'B': Bow nails

I'm back with my entry for 'B' on Nail Polish Society's ABC Challenge! This is a new weekly nail art challenge based on the 26 letters of the alphabet. Last Friday I did an accent nail design for 'A'.

For 'B', I had a few ideas - my favourite was my sister's quirky idea of 'Bonsai'. However, given my lack of freehand painting skills and a stamping plate with bonsai patterns - I settled for 'Bows', using my favourite tool, striping tape.

Read on for the details, more photos and a video tutorial!

I started with this beautiful base colour, 'Tiger Lily', from Femme Fatale Cosmetics' latest Enchanted Fables collection. It's a light pink-mauve colour, with an overlay of light green shimmer. The shimmer makes it look really ethereal.

I needed three coats for the colour to be opaque. I also found that the shimmer leaves visible brushstrokes (see the macro below), so I just tried to keep the brushstrokes straight, which I think looks alright.

The bow design that I planned would cover up most of this shade, which I felt bad about given how pretty it is! So I decided to paint the bows only on my middle and ring fingers. Here's the video showing how I did it.

I used two pieces of striping tape to section off an X-shape near the base of my nail, and filled in the spaces with Femme Fatale's 'Rose Red' (also from the Enchanted Fables Collection) and Cirque Colors 'Whitney' (which I have a full swatch of here). Then I removed the tape to reveal the design.

To make the pattern look more bow-like, I added a small silver rhinestone to the center. To do this, I added top coat to smooth everything out, then quickly placed the rhinestone while the top coat was still wet.

As I sorted through my macro shots, the stud in the center began to look like an eyeball...
