ABC Challenge 'O': Odd one out

It's Friday again - and we've reached the letter O on Nail Polish Society's ABC Challenge. As I mentioned in last week's N for Negative space nails, I had something a little different planned for today's design. Here are my Odd One Out nails - which was entirely thought up by my boyfriend!

A while ago my boyfriend spotted this bow-tie pattern on my UberChic stamping plate (9-01), and came up with the idea of having a single odd red bow-tie among lots of black bow-ties. I figured that it would indeed be possible to make this a reality with some reverse-stamping, and so here I am with a manicure entirely designed by him!

I did initially try out the red-among-black combination, using the same process as shown in the video below, but the white stamping polish did not show up well over black. (The switch from black to grey was also his idea!)

In my first couple of attempts I used a dotting tool instead of a detail brush to fill in the red bow-tie, which is of course less precise but easier. Unfortunately, when I peeled off the decal and reversed the pattern, it turned out that the darker red polish showed through the white where I had gone outside the lines. It looked quite splotchy, so I re-did it using a detail brush to paint in the space more neatly.

Although this took many attempts, I love the end result! I think it's really cute.

That's it for this week! I will be back next Friday with my design for the letter 'P'. Unfortunately I will have to sit out next Wednesday's Watermarble Practice, as I need to catch up on work - I'm losing quite a bit of time to watching the Olympics at the moment! Don't forget to check out what the other challenge participants have done for the letter 'O' by following the links below.
